O Bureau Internacional de Capitais Culturais divulgou hoje, 04-07-2008, que a Catedral, o Congresso Nacional, o Palácio da Alvorada, o Palácio do Planalto, o Templo da Boa Vontade, o Santuário Dom Bosco e a Ponte JK foram eleitos por votação popular como as 7 Maravilhas do Patrimônio Cultural Material de Brasília.
No total participaram na eleição 22.971 pessoas que emitiram 64.718 votos. Alguns votaram somente em uma das 25 candidatas que optavam em converter-se nas 7 maravilhas de Brasília e outros votaram em 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 ou no máximo permitido de 7. Todos votos foram enviados exclusivamente por correio eletrônico.
A classificação oficial e final da eleição das 7 maravilhas de Brasília é a seguinte:

O presidente do Bureau Internacional de Capitais Culturais, Xavier Tudela, declarou em Barcelona, cidade onde o Bureau tem a sua sede, que “as 7 maravilhas de Brasília serão uma nova porta de entrada ao conhecimento do patrimônio cultural material desta cidade. Espero que, com as suas 7 maravilhas, Brasília possa atrair mais turismo cultural nacional e internacional. Estamos muito satisfeitos com a resposta dos cidadãos para esta iniciativa do Bureau e estamos convencidos que a partir de agora o patrimônio cultural material de Brasília será muito mais conhecido e apreciado pelos cidadãos, tanto brasileiros como estrangeiros”.
Por outro lado, Mário Vendrell, delegado do Bureau Internacional de Capitais Culturais no Brasil informou desde São Paulo que “Brasília, que é a Capital Americana da Cultura 2008, foi dentre as cinco cidades que elegeram as suas 7 maravilhas locais, a que teve maior participação da população. Isto reforça a imagem internacional do Brasil de um país onde seus cidadãos se aderem sempre, e de forma massiva, a campanhas positivas como esta das 7 maravilhas”.
A campanha de eleição das 7 maravilhas do patrimônio cultural material de Brasília se insere na eleição das 7 maravilhas locais de Barcelona e Madri (Espanha), Nizhny Novgorod (Rússia) e Sarajevo (Bósnia e Herzegovina).
O Bureau Internacional de Capitais Culturais realiza a eleição das 7 maravilhas do patrimônio cultural material de Brasília, e das outras quatro cidades, com o objetivo de divulgar esse patrimônio de uma forma didática, pedagógica, lúdica e, ao mesmo tempo, motivar a visita dos lugares propostos e eleitos, estabelecendo novas rotas turísticas que permitam aos visitantes conhecer de forma sintética a riqueza patrimonial de Brasília e das outras cidades participantes.
O Bureau Internacional de Capitais Culturais criou e desenvolve a Capital Americana de la Cultura, a Capital de la Cultura Catalana, a Capital Brasileira da Cultura, a US Capital of Culture e a Capital de la Cultura Española. Os objetivos do Bureau são: promover e desenvolver as capitais culturais criadas pelo Bureau; coordenar as atividades com as outras capitais culturais existentes no mundo; promover a criação de capitais culturais nos lugares do mundo onde ainda não exista essa iniciativa; colaborar com instituições e entidades culturais para alcançar objetivos comuns; proporcionar a assessoria a instituições públicas e privadas para o desenvolvimento de projetos culturais; e desenvolver diretamente iniciativas culturais em todo o mundo, como por exemplo, a eleição das 7 maravilhas do patrimônio cultural material em Barcelona, Brasília, Madri, Nizhny Novgorod e Sarajevo. Barcelona, Brasília, Madrid, Nizhny Novgorod and Sarajevo have elected the 7 wonders of their material cultural heritage
The International Bureau of Cultural Capitals has promoted, during the month of June, 2008, the election of 7 wonders of the material cultural heritage of Barcelona, Brasília, Madrid, Nizhny Novgorod and Sarajevo. As said by Xavier Tudela, President of the Bureau, these five cities or regions represent very well “the variety and richness of the international material cultural heritage”.
The election took place during the month of June simultaneously in these five areas of the world. En each one of the cities there were 25 candidatures and, by citizens vote, in which thousands of people took part, each city or region have elected their 7 most representative sites. After the election process is completed, the 7 local wonders of Barcelona, Brasília, Madrid, Nizhny Novgorod and Sarajevo are as follows:

The election of the 7 wonders of the material cultural heritage of Barcelona, Brasília, Madrid, Nizhny Novgorod and Sarajevo has taken as a reference the universally recognised 7 wonders of the Ancient world. Those were the Great Cheops Pyramid at Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Temple of Artemisia at Ephesus, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria.
The International Bureau of Cultural Capitals has promoted the election by citizens of the 7 wonders of the material cultural heritage of Barcelona, Brasília, Madrid, Nizhny Novgorod and Sarajevo with the wish to spread the heritage in a didactic, pedagogic, recreational way and, at the same time, to cause the selected and elected sites to be visited as well as to establish new tourist routes allowing the visitors to acknowledge the richness of the international heritage in a synthetic manner.
The International Bureau of Cultural Capitals has created and is evolving the American Capital of Culture, the Capital of the Catalan Culture, the Brazilian Capital of Culture, the US Capital of Culture and other projects establishing cultural capitals. The Bureau's goals are to promote and evolve the cultural capitals created by this body; to co-ordinate activities with the other cultural capitals existing in the world; to promote the creation of cultural capitals in the areas of the world where they don't exist yet; to collaborate with cultural institutions and entities in order to achieve common goals; to provide consulting to public and private institutions on evolvement of cultural projects and, finally, to directly evolve cultural initiatives all over the world like the election of the 7 wonders of the cultural material heritage of Barcelona, Brasília, Madrid, Nizhniy Novgorod and Sarajevo.
